With spring in the air a romantic picnic with your beloved should be on the cards. What better than this heart shaped wicket picnic basket from Laura Ashley to hold an exquisite selection of gourmet goodies and set the mood for romance?
It contains two wine glasses, two plates, two sets of cutlery, a bottle opener, lest you forget that all-important tool, and a floral wine cooler – pink champagne, or chilled rosé do you think?
The only little quibble I have is that there doesn’t seem to be room for a huge amount of food – more antipasto than three course dinner, but if it’s romance we’re talking who’s going to be concentrating on the food anyway!
With Laura Ashley’s renowned floral fabric lining the basket this could be a wonderful spring time gift for that special romantic girl, even better filled with her favourite delicacies … and don’t forget the chocolate truffles!
Laura Ashley 3A097061 Heart Shaped Picnic Basket, Cressida currently costs $75.99 down from $131.99 at Amazon.
Such a simple thing yet it can be so hard to find nice ones – these red heart paper doilies would be great for presenting all sorts of treats, for kids’ parties or for romantic occasions.
They are well made and don’t leak color. Each pack contains 24 doilies and they measure 6 inches across.
Fox Run 6-Inch Red Heart Paper Doilies, 24 Per Pack cost $4.20 from Amazon.
Too rich and gorgeous to resist – these Venetian glass heart earrings just have to go with soft velvets, rich brocades, silks and satins… or just with a little black dress in sophisticated style.
They are hand-made with Venetian glass heart beads that have gold foil at the core and colored glass patterns in the next layer, set off by red Swarovski crystals and gold wire – jewels fit for a princess.
As each heart bead is hand-made no two are the same. Each bead measures 13mm / ½ inch across and the earrings are light and comfortable to wear.
Heart Earrings cost $ 19.50 from Helen’s Adornments on Etsy
Quirky time-pieces seem to be looking out for me right now – this wacky folk art heart clock is so off the wall it has to be on the wall… if you’ll excuse the terrible pun.
The clock is hand carved from wood by the artist in Massachusetts and then has various pieces added on to make it more sculptural – metal circles and wings and wood arrow and a pewter clock face as well as a pewter plaque declaring that Time Flies.
It’s quite large at 25” tall and 16” wide and would made an attention grabbing piece in any off-beat decor. I quite fancy it for my kitchen- it would certainly bring a smile to my face amid the morning breakfast rush, counting down till it’s time to dash out the door on the school run.
‘Time Flies’ Folk Art Heart Wall Clock, Carved Wood & Pewter, 25″costs $119.99 from Amazon.
I’d never thought of a wooden watch strap before – but it’s the perfect solution for those who can’t wear metal next to the skin, and it looks great in a retro, cuckoo-clock kind of a way!
The wood is solid Sandalwood from sustainable sources in Africa and India and is handcrafted to make a watch and stretch watch band of individual linked hearts. The wood is said to look better with age as it is polished and shined with daily skin contact and is splash resistant but not waterproof. The watch working itself is made in Japan by Citizen so reliable and good quality.
All in all this is a great gift idea for anyone who loves hearts, loves wood and has a quirky taste in watches.
Tense Wood Watch Ladies Solid Wood Heart Band Stretch Hypo-Allergenic Watch L7007S costs $89 from The Watch Co via Amazon.
This isn’t something money can buy – the extraordinary pencil artist carves leads into tiny sculptural pieces, but he gives them to his friends.
I can’t imagine how much dexterity it takes to carve something as small as a pencil lead into a detailed sculpture like this. This would have to be the ultimate Valentine gift showing such devotion!

Gorgeous and gaudy, these hand-made and hand-painted tin heart ornaments and plaques are a great way to add colour to your home. I love the energy of the bright colours and the fact that each one is slightly different, as they are all hand made by artists in Oaxaca in Mexico.
There are a wide variety of wall plaques and smaller tin heart ornaments too, which would be great to decorate Christmas trees. They are bought directly from the artists and imported by Phil Saviano at his website Viva Oaxaco Folk Art, based in Boston.
The tin heart plaque pictured measures 7” tall and costs $5.79.
I’m on a roll with the wood theme now and have just discovered these wonderful chunky reclaimed wood cutting boards made by Living Wood Designs in Canada.
The one pictured here in Black cherry wood already has a wonderful simple rustic heart detail carved on it, but there is also the option of adding a more intricate carved heart design to any of Living Wood Design’s other boards and wood items.
The heart cutting board pictured above costs $49 from Living Wood Designs at Etsy.
Picture this reclaimed Maple board with the carved heart detail in one corner….
This is what I’ve been looking for for ages… a beautiful and simple hand-carved wooden heart. Slightly distressed and with a beautiful grain showing through and a lovely warm glow, I love the way the walnut has been used so sympathetically.
This wood heart is big – 12″ by 14″ approx and 2″ thick, but the back is flat so it can be hung on the wall.
Valentine’s may be over but this would make a wonderful gift at any time of year – for an anniversary, a wedding gift, a birthday or just because.

In honour of Valentine’s Day, I’ve chosen something really beautiful, and unattainable for most of us – a gorgeous ceramic decorative plate by South African-based artist Ruan Hoffman. It’s a one-off piece exclusively available from the art gallery of Anthropologie and costing a mere $498 – but free for all of us to look at!
Happy Valentine’s Day to you…. and don’t forget that hearts and romance are for all year round…. not just this one day of the year. xxxx
