A heart shaped box of candy is something of a Valentine’s Day cliché.. isn’t it? Nothing wrong with that, especially if they are your favorite chocolates, but there is usually more cardboard than chocolates, so despite the good intentions they can be rather disappointing and look less than generous.
So what to do?
Add just a little imagination to the gift selection… Why not buy your beloved’s favourite candy in the regular, much cheaper packaging, get much more of it, and fill a beautiful heart-shaped bowl with it?
There are lots of gorgeous bowls that make perfect gifts and filled with every chocoholics favourite LindOr they are bound to win hearts, as well as making a gift that lasts beyond the last foil wrapper.
Here are just a few suggestions of heart-shaped bowls that would be welcome gifts even without the chocolate inside!

A romantic gift for a guy can be hard to find, especially if he’s not really into all the soppy heart stuff. But if you want to smuggle that heart touch of romance into a really practical gift that he’ll appreciate (if he’s a woodworking type), this set of chisels from Stanley might be just the job.
It’s a good quality version of a classic design, (the Sweetheart series, see the subtle romantic allusion!) with hornbeam wood handles and high carbon chromium steel. And for the romantic in you there is a heart shaped logo on the handle!
Stanley 16-791 Sweetheart 750 Series Socket Chisel 4 Piece Setis a set of four chisels that currently costs $97.94, down from $158.60 at Amazon. A bargain for the quality!
Just looking at this pretty assortment of heart shaped buttons is enough to inspire a whole host of craft ideas, especially with spring in the air and Easter approaching.
Give them to the kids to make cards with, sew them onto your Easter bonnets, decorate clothes or make them into necklaces.

This beautiful olive wood ornament is a really unusual Christmas tree decoration and would make a wonderful gift. It’s made in Bethlehem out of local olive wood and is cleverly hand-carved into a 3D nativity scene, with the warm natural grain of the wood a big part of its attraction. Continue reading
The simplicity of these heart shapes along with the gorgeous grain of the wood is what makes these hearts appeal to me.
They’d be perfect for a romantic gift to someone who loves all things natural… and sustainable of course.
This wood was harvested from an 700 year old oak tree that came down in a storm on an English country estate – the full story of the wood is on the original Etsy listing.
The heart comes with a quotation inscribed around the edge, but this can be substituted by your own message or an alternative quotation if you prefer.
Crafted by Tim Nicholls of Woodpunk Designs in England, the wooden heart costs £40 or approx $64 via Etsy.
These wooden heart buttons are so pretty that I’d be tempted not to use them for sewing at all, but to frame them exactly as they are.
Or use them as decorations rather than buttons or part of an embroidery project. Let them start off a creative impulse of a flowery variety. Off course they would also look great as part of a sewing project.
There are 20 buttons in the set, in a random mix of colourful flower designs each measuring about 17mm or 2/3 inch across.
They are for sale on Etsy by Rainbow Lollies for $5.50 the set.
Quirky time-pieces seem to be looking out for me right now – this wacky folk art heart clock is so off the wall it has to be on the wall… if you’ll excuse the terrible pun.
The clock is hand carved from wood by the artist in Massachusetts and then has various pieces added on to make it more sculptural – metal circles and wings and wood arrow and a pewter clock face as well as a pewter plaque declaring that Time Flies.
It’s quite large at 25” tall and 16” wide and would made an attention grabbing piece in any off-beat decor. I quite fancy it for my kitchen- it would certainly bring a smile to my face amid the morning breakfast rush, counting down till it’s time to dash out the door on the school run.

I’d never thought of a wooden watch strap before – but it’s the perfect solution for those who can’t wear metal next to the skin, and it looks great in a retro, cuckoo-clock kind of a way!
The wood is solid Sandalwood from sustainable sources in Africa and India and is handcrafted to make a watch and stretch watch band of individual linked hearts. The wood is said to look better with age as it is polished and shined with daily skin contact and is splash resistant but not waterproof. The watch working itself is made in Japan by Citizen so reliable and good quality.
All in all this is a great gift idea for anyone who loves hearts, loves wood and has a quirky taste in watches.
Tense Wood Watch Ladies Solid Wood Heart Band Stretch Hypo-Allergenic Watch L7007S costs $89 from The Watch Co via Amazon.
I’m on a roll with the wood theme now and have just discovered these wonderful chunky reclaimed wood cutting boards made by Living Wood Designs in Canada.
The one pictured here in Black cherry wood already has a wonderful simple rustic heart detail carved on it, but there is also the option of adding a more intricate carved heart design to any of Living Wood Design’s other boards and wood items.
The heart cutting board pictured above costs $49 from Living Wood Designs at Etsy.
Picture this reclaimed Maple board with the carved heart detail in one corner….
This is what I’ve been looking for for ages… a beautiful and simple hand-carved wooden heart. Slightly distressed and with a beautiful grain showing through and a lovely warm glow, I love the way the walnut has been used so sympathetically.
This wood heart is big – 12″ by 14″ approx and 2″ thick, but the back is flat so it can be hung on the wall.
Valentine’s may be over but this would make a wonderful gift at any time of year – for an anniversary, a wedding gift, a birthday or just because.
